The First 24 Hours
Your new tattoo is essentially an open wound, and the first 24 hours are critical. Leave the bandage on for the time your artist recommends — typically 2 to 4 hours. When you remove it, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
Days 2-3: The Oozing Phase
Your tattoo will likely ooze plasma and excess ink. This is completely normal. Continue to wash it 2-3 times daily. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never use a bath towel as it can harbor bacteria.
The golden rule: clean hands every time you touch your tattoo. Infection is the biggest risk during healing.
Days 4-7: The Itchy Phase
As your tattoo begins to heal, it will start to peel and itch. Do not scratch or pick at it. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizer to help with the itching.
What to Avoid
- Swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths
- Direct sunlight on the tattoo
- Tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo
- Picking or scratching the peeling skin
- Applying too much ointment — a thin layer is enough
Long-Term Care
Once healed (typically 2-4 weeks), your tattoo still needs protection. Always apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) when exposing it to sunlight. Keep the skin moisturized to maintain vibrancy. Your tattoo is an investment in art — treat it like one.
